Our Courses

Designing For Health, Safety and Welfare In Educational Science Laboratories

Educational labs are inherently dangerous and require careful safety considerations during design and construction, whether for new buildings or renovations. This three-part learning series covers key safety aspects of lab design, including building layout, workstations, ventilation, storage, safety equipment and material selection. Real-world examples of good and poor planning reinforce the concepts throughout. Each part counts toward 1 AIA/IDCEC/HSW LU Credit.

Part 1: Prebuild Room Planning

Participants will learn to communicate the importance of safe lab design in educational spaces, identify key safety organizations, apply prebuild safety best practices like footprint planning and per-student size allotments, address infrastructure needs such as ventilation, plumbing, and electrical, and assess lab floor plans for compliance and improvements.

Part 2: Workstation Planning

Participants will compare interior and perimeter lab workstations, learn how to specify student and instructor workstations tailored to the functional and safety needs of core science disciplines, assess material options based on discipline and furniture configuration, and evaluate real-life labs for safe design.

Part 3: Perimeter & Safety Equipment Planning

Participants will learn to communicate the importance of safe design in non-workspace areas of educational labs, identify and compare perimeter planning elements that enhance safety, design labs with essential safety features, and evaluate floorplans to ensure optimal safety and compliance.

Don’t Blow Up My Lab! (3-in-1 Course)

This condensed workshop combines the key elements of the three comprehensive courses from the “Designing For Health, Safety and Welfare in Educational Science Laboratories” learning series into one focused session on safe lab design. This counts toward 1 AIA/IDCEC/HSW LU Credit.

Designing Safe, Engaging Science Labs

Covering everything from building and room planning to workstation design, safety equipment, and storage, participants will learn how to apply HSW standards, compare workstation options, and identify common planning mistakes. Through a hands-on exercise, teams will collaborate to design a safe, inspiring lab space that supports student learning while minimizing the inherent risks of science labs.
